I read tons of reviews and even contacted Tunze about this unit. The main complaint I’ve found is that the algae doesn’t spin. I installed this unit and put a golf ball size Chaeto in. It spins just fine. After 4 weeks, the canister was completely full and not spinning. I opened it up and removed everything but a golf ball size Chaeto. It’s worked just as designed.
My phosphates went down sharply. I also eliminated the pesky algae that would appear in the sand during my light cycle.
I’m happy with the solution. Easy to install and maintain. I’m still dealing with algae on my glass as I’m running my nitrates a bit high as my soft corals like it that way. I highly recommend this as a clean and simple solution.

Macro Algae Reactor
The Macro Algae Reactor MAR 3181 is specially constructed to cultivate algae in seawater and plants in freshwater.
Chaetomorpha "Spaghetti Algae" is cultured by many marine aquarists to eliminate nitrates and phosphates from the aquatic biotope. It is absolutely sufficient to harvest a handful of algae from time to time to maintain the biological balance in an aquarium – an economical and easy alternative to many chemicals or resins.
Naja Grass, Najas guadalupensis, can be grown to purify freshwater systems,
such as cichlid biotopes.
TUNZE MAR 3181 can be placed in any filter basin or next to the aquarium without external filter technology.
The water circulation in the reactor ensures the rotation of the algae culture and thus reduces the number of light sources accompanied by strong plant growth. However, additional light sources can be added to the device as needed.
